We had the chance to attent a Single Fin coaching week in San Vicente de la Barquera in Spain. The beautiful bay in Cantabria with its consistent right-hander wave with a magnificent view overlooking the ‘Picos de Europa’ on one side and the ancient town San Vicente de la Barquera on the other side make a surf session in this spot picture perfect.
During the coaching week we learned everything there is to know about longboarding from Single Fin founder Nienke Duinmeijer and coach Ruben Fuente (CeCe surfboards), both professional longboard surfers.
What does a typical day at Single Fin look like?
Imagine a day in Spain. You wake up early in the morning for a surf coaching session in the water. There is still no one around and you see the sun rising up behind the green hills. You are focussed on cross stepping and your surf coach gives you tips and tricks. A Single Fin crew member on the beach is catching all action in the line-up on camera. After the session, there is a breakfast buffet with fresh bread, a fruit platter and pancakes. After breakfast everybody gets to see a selection of their waves on screen and they get feedback to work on for the next session. There is some time to relax and have a nice coffee (or have a second session). A day at Single Fin all depends on the tide and surf conditions of that day, therefore there is no typical day or weekly schedule.
After a good lunch with salads and soup it is time for a road trip to Rodiles. A breath taking spot in Asturias. Normally a heavy riverbreak, but with small waves an excellent beachbreak surrounded by eucalyptus trees and mountains. You have a free surfing session there and on the beach the surf coaches explain all aspects of the longboard and fin. For example, what are 50/50 rails and in what kind of conditions would you use that? Or what is a hatchet fin? After the road trip you come back to San Vicente de la Barquera and eat some delicious tapas in the idyllic centre village.
Not sure about what kind of board you should surf? No problem, you can try out all sorts of longboards from local shaper CeCe surfboards. A professional photographer (Meike Reijerman or Marjolein Pieneman) makes sure everybody gets that great action shot they wished for. The cook serves delicious and healthy food that helps you to recover and gives you the energy for the two daily surf sessions. Take a break from surfing and explore the surroundings by joining one of the road trips during this week.
Single Fin stands for sustainability and respect for the local community. Nienke: “We find it important to support the local community so we make sure that local operators receive a fair price. We also donate 1% for the planet.“

What guests say about Single Fin
We asked Gebke Compeer, a surfer from Scheveningen, Holland. Gebke joined the Single Fin coachings week in San Vicente de la Barquera for the third time. She is still stoked!
“After a few years of surfing, I fell for the style of longboarding. I just didn’t quite know how to do all those manoeuvres and I got stuck on the same level. The Single Fin coaching has helped me to understand the technique and now I am able to do cross-steps! The next manoeuvre on my wish list is the drop knee turn. I just love the vibe of like-minded people and the positive way of coaching. Can’t wait to go again!”
