Zala Cuden. Traveling & Surfing for a living.
We have been following Slovenian surfer Zala Cuden on Instagram for a while now and saw that she was traveling from one paradise to the other. We loved her surfy lifestyle and wanted to know more about her. So, time to make Zala Featured Surfer for Sea Melon!
Hi Zala, please tell us a little about yourself and about your love for surfing.
Hi, I am Zala, I am twenty-eight years old and I grew up in Slovenia. The last four years I have been traveling around the world, chasing summer and chasing the perfect wave. I started surfing nine years ago during a vacation in Spain. I loved it so much! Surfing became my big passion and I can’t imagine life without it. For the first few years I was surfing just two or three weeks a year during vacations. Eventually I started working in a surf camp and got my surf instructor license. Ever since I am traveling around and teach surfing.
What kind of board do you surf?
I have two boards, one 5’11 which is more an all around board for smaller waves and a 6’0 for a bit bigger waves. The brand is BoardFarm co.
What is your favorite surf spot and what is your dream surf destination?
My favourite spot so far is Telescopes on the Mentawais. I love the island vibe. I have surfed some of the most perfect left and right hander waves there. My dream destination is definitely Hawaii.
You surf pretty big waves. Do you ever feel scared and how do you overcome your fear?
I had a few experiences with scary waves… but I must admit, I kinda like it! I like challenges and I like the feeling of being scared a little bit. For me the scariest thing is to lose my board.
The more you surf, the more comfortable you are with all types of waves. Although it’s good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes, it is really important to know what your abilities are to avoid dangerous situations.
“Surfing became my big passion and I can’t imagine life without it”
Besides surfing, what are your passions?
I am also a social media manager which I really like. I can do it wherever I am which goes great with my lifestyle.
What is your favorite surf wear brand?
Last but not least question. What would you advice girls that want to start surfing or want to improve their level of surfing?
Try it! It can change your life forever. And be careful, it’s highly addictive 😉
The more you surf, the better you get. Take some extra lessons or coaching with video analyses. It can be confronting but it helps you to understand what you should work on. It will help you to get better for sure.
